As is usual at one of Alex's events, Double Trouble featured a number of painting competitions. The quality of the entrants was as high as normal, with some fantastic models that the poor lighting and my photography skills will not give justice.
First up, we have the entrants for best army. I entered my force in this simply to show off my old GorkaMorka fort, repurposed for 40k terrain, but with no illusions of actually getting any votes. The Dark Angels cowering at the back were the first 40k models that I ever painted. They were brought along as part of Luke's challenge to field your first models at Double Trouble.
The winner was Steven Horne and his amazing Raven Guard army. I actually got to play against the army in my second game of the tournament and it looked brilliant on the tabletop.
Next up, the best conversion category. There were only two entrants in this set; a marine army with some great 3D printed elements and NafNaf's phenomenal circus-themed Dark Eldar army (that I was also fortunate to play against). I think everyone knew who the winner was going to be here and NafNaf won in a landslide.
The single miniature entry had some amazing work on display, with the win going to Rob Hill's 30k Mechanicus tank.
The character painting competition saw some equally great entries, but unfortunately I was unable to get any photos of these.

Hope you enjoyed the photos.
Those are some of the nicer pics I've seen from the event. Well done coping with the lighting there. Especially with that Raven Guard force. Something with that kind of contrast has to be a nightmare to photograph in poor lighting. Glad you got some good shots of it, because I hadn't seen any others that really did it justice, and now I see what everyone has been raving about.
ReplyDeleteCheers WestRider. It's a shame that the poor lighting (and venue in general) let down some of the great work on display.
DeleteI've seen a few posts about the event where the lighting was brought up as an issue. Personally I have never found poor lighting to affect a game, although for a painting comp I can understand.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't tend to affect the game, but for those of us with blogs that like to take photos of our games or videos, it does make it harder to get decent quality photos.
DeleteA lot can depend on the camera, generally a decent slr and flash unit should give good results, although I tend to forget to take my flash with me!
DeletePoor lighting can also, over the course of a day lead to concentration issues or headaches which can affect some people as well
DeleteFrom my experience most of that is down to hydration and diet. I generally see lots of people stuffing sweets and fizzy drinks or nothing at all, neither of which is good for long term concentrstion, but yes the poor light probably would help much.
DeleteDepends on the person. Some people are more prone to light-related headaches and such than others.
DeleteThanks for sharing! Nafnaf won well deserved for sure! The Raven Guard is really hard to make out, and the uh, snow(?) doesn't help any. The weathering looks fantastic though!
ReplyDeleteNafnaf should win by default. My goodness those conversions. Thanks for all the pics!
