Second Birthday Giveaway- Win a Genestealers Cult Force

NOTE: This competition is now closed!

St Andrews Wargaming will be turning two years old in a couple of weeks. After the success of my first Birthday Giveaway, where you could win a free Battle Demi-Company, I have decided to do a similar giveaway this year.

After some recent purchases, I found myself with an excess of Genestealer Cults kits. As a result, I am giving you the chance to win a Genestealer Cults starter army of your very own.

Included in the giveaway is:
  • Genestealer Cults Codex
  • Broodcoven (Patriarch, Magus and Primus from Deathwatch Overkill)
  • 4 Aberrants (from Deathwatch Overkill)
  • 16 Neophyte Hybrids (from Deathwatch Overkill)
  • A box of Acolyte Hybrids
  • Acolyte Iconward
Everything a growing cult needs to get started! All models are unassembled and unpainted, so are free for any scheme you wish to paint.

In order to win the prize you must do the following:
  • Add yourself as a Follower of the blog using the Follower box on the right hand side of the blog (if you are not already a follower). Also, please drop me an email at corrm83@gmail.com with your entry (this makes it easier to verify the winner).
  • Comment below and tell me your favourite special rule in 40k and why?
  • Be sure to sign in when you comment below. Otherwise, your name will come up as Anonymous and your entry won't be counted. If your screen name is different to your follower name, let me know in the comment so that I can find you.
  • For those of you using the mobile site, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "View Web Version" in order to see the Follower app and to sign up.
The closing date for the contest is Sunday 30th April at 12pm (GMT). After that, a single entrant will be selected at random to win the prize. All I ask is that all entrants are prepared to pay the postage fee to ship the prize to them (especially for those international entrants).
THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED!

Good luck, and may the Hive Mind smile upon your endeavours!

  1. Generous as always!!! Quite the gent Mike :)

I personally live feel no pain, it really evokes the imagery of a warrior shrugging off otherwise mortal wounds and powering through on adrenaline and blood lust.

    Good luck to all :)

  2. Im getting back inti things after 6 years away but im liking prprecision shot/strike - taking out that specialist weapin in the unit.....

  3. Two years already? Wow, that is pretty cool. Congratulations to all involved.

As for a special rule? Slow and Purposeful, mainly due to the imagary it provides. Heavy armoured units stomping forward, weapons blazing.

  4. Relentless is the best rule. Dakka dakka dakka...on the move :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. Greg took my first choice b/c relentless is the balls. My second favorite is 'skilled rider'. The ability to maneuver bikes through difficult terrain with impunity is great on the table, and, I believe it reinforces the thematic themes for the White Scars chapter in particular.

  6. I'm not 100% sure what my favorite special rule is, as a new player but Feel No Pain seems pretty legit. -Tyler M

  7. Dunestrider, anything to make run and charges less random.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I like the cult ambush and return the shadows rules of the genestealer cults. A strong thematic connection to the mechanics of the army that can make you feel like a trickster.

    ReplyDelete
  9. My favorite special rule would have to be Eternal Warrior. I love the idea of someone who suffers a grievous wound and still gets up and gets back into the fray!

  10. I love the zealot rule. It turns my large groups of guardsmen and bulgryn into monsyers

  11. I like the it will not die rule. Granted, I hate using it since I feel like a cheesy douche, but I love playing against a super heavy with the rule. It gives the best kind of impossible challenge.

    1. I wouldn't worry about that. I find it rare that anyone actually remembers to use this rule in games though.

  13. My favorite rule is Power from Pain. (From the 5th edition DE codex at least, the 7th was a bit more boring.) I really liked the idea of my Dark Eldar taking the souls and pain of slain foes to empower themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Barrage! I like that you actually allocate wounds from under the template, not just from the nearest models first. Thunderfire Cannons are my favourite because of Barrage.

    ReplyDelete
  15. My favorite special rule is the Tau Riptides Nova Reactor, highly versatile rewards but always with a risk that the Reactor might just overload and fail.

    ReplyDelete
  16. My favorite special rule is probably Living Battering Ram. D3 S9 Hammer of Wrath pretty much seals the fate of any vehicle!

    ReplyDelete
  17. FURIOUS CHARGE!! Anything that encourages smashing headlong into the enemy!

    ReplyDelete
  18. 'ERE WE GO CUZ GREEN IZ BEST

  19. I'm a big fan of Feel No Pain. Nothing quite like getting another save because you just don't care that a bolter blew off your hand.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I know its a bit of cheese but I am a big lover of Aun'vas double invocations and board wide reroll leadership checks. Its risky taking an ethereal but I think the bonuses outweigh the cons here. Plus his paradoxical save is hilarious. AP1? Ha. Lasgun fire? Please God no...

    ReplyDelete
  21. In general I love the last chance of Feel no Pain. For assaulting I'm town between Rending and FURIOUS CHARGE. Both are useful and make assaults more fun (for the attacker anyway). And there's a rule that says FURIOUS CHARGE must in all caps and I respect that.

  22. Looks like my first post got swallowed by the internet... :-/

First off: Cheers Michael! Good job on the blog running for two years already and making so many great posts! Keep rocking, mate! :-)

    As to the special rules:
I think 'Supporting Fire' is a pretty cool thing. It's cool imagening how some crazy brutes (Orkz, Khorne Berzerk, Space Wolves...) are charging a unit of Fire warriors and all of the fellow Fire warriors join up to stop those maniacs!
    Love the thought of that.
Also, the Imperial Guard needs some similar skill! ;-)

    Cheers,
    Hendrik

    1. Thank you for your awesome blog and this giveaway! My favourite rule is the interceptor one, because it can change the result of a game. Just yesterday i managed to kill a few guys in a strategic deepstriking unit owned by my opponent...this ultimately led me to win the game! The first game i won in the few months i"ve started playing!:)

    2. Cheers Hendrick! My guard would love some Supporting Fire!

  23. It's a tough call, but I think I have to go with Unquestioning Loyalty Just for the image of a Magus or Primus verbally ordering his followers to stay back and not interfere in his Challenge with the enemy Character, while telepathically directing them to jump in front of him and soak all the hits.

"Stand back, brethren! The Captain is mine. This is an affair of honour, and none shall interfere."
telepathically *seriously tho, guys, watch my back. anything i don't dodge, you damn well better jump in front of*

Trazyn the Infinite's Surrogate Hosts and the Alpha Legion's Many Heads of the Hydra (or as I prefer to call it, "I am...NOT Alpharius!") are close runners up, for similarly trolltastic reasons :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. My favourite rule has to be Psychic Abomination on the Culexus assassin for that 24" bubble of NO PSYCHIC FUN ALLOWED.
This is great for when you'd really really really REALLY like to wipe the smug smile off your chaos demon fielding, warp charge generating, Magnus worshipping, heretical friend.

    ReplyDelete
  25. My favorite special rule is either Feel No Pain or It Will Not Die because I enjoy having tough units, no matter the game.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My favourite rule has to be Skreamin' Descent, in particular the "Faster! Waaagh! Uh oh..." result, because nothing says Orks more than an ork pilot going into a high G drive at the enemy that he just can't pull out of...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Probably Soul Blaze... no wait, you said Favorite rule, that would have to be Jetpack/Jetbike assault move. Jump-Shoot-Jump is so much fun.

    ReplyDelete

    1. If it was favourite rule that no one ever remembers, Soul Blaze would win for sure!

  28. I'd have to say drop pod assault. Nothing says 40k like 1000 tons of flaming metal dropping on your head filled with murderous demigods!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mine would have to be 'Flaming Projectiles' for the Legion of the Damned. Pretty much all the Legions special rules are super fluffy and in fitting with what they represent in the game, but nothing quite says 'Death Metal Space Band turned up to Eleventy Stupid' like having all your ordinance wreathed in flames! Got Mass Reactive Rounds Astartes? Ha! Ours have FLAMES coming out of them!

The fact that it grants them 'ignores cover' is also a nice boon :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. Its gotta be death or glory. Nothing is more 40k than a Sargent dropping his weapon and charging a on-coming tank. All to go out in a blaze of glory!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gets hot. Probably because if anyone specialises in finding ways of killing their own guys it's me - I have endless anecdotes from playing worms far too much at and before uni. So to be able to take weapons that can kill your own guys in 40k is great, and even more fun is watching Tau players not have overheating plasma weapons, but being able to actually choose to overheat their Ion Weapons and Nova Reactors (yes, of course I used to overcharge mine!).

Congrats on the blog birthday - I can guarantee it will keep going from strength to strength!

    1. I do love a bot of self killing Plasma guns. Imagine if Grav got Gets Hot in the new edition!

  33. My favorite 40k rule would have to be Synapse. The idea of base animal instincts overcome with the mental power of one organism is very well represented on the tabletop.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Congrats on the two years Mike. Your content has been great, so here's to another two years of more :)

I won't enter the competition as I have no need of a new army (far too many projects I have on my table) but it it a very generous giveaway :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well first keep up the great job on the blog! I would have to say my favourite rule is the Reanimation Protocols! It's helps build the best mental image of the necron warriors taking massive damage from weapons and then self repairing and continuing on as if nothing happened!

    Regards,
    Andrew Pelletier

  36. My favorite rule is Hit n' Run, because it gives my White Scars the feel that that had been missing for years. A single guy on foot being able to stop the charge of cavalry (or bikes) just felt wrong.

    Great Blog, by the way!

  38. Defintely superheavy walker stomps!

Thematically, grinding those worms underneath the tread of my dread ancient titanic warmachine while i hear the lamentation of their alien women.

Also, a very practical rule as well since it accomplishes something very important (avoiding superheavies from completely being bogged down with infantry without ignoring them)

  40. My favourite rule is champion of chaos, not so much for the forced challenges, but i love the feeling of rolling on the boon table to see how the gods have rewarded me for crushing my opponent.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oddly my favorite rule is probably Unwieldy. While I like that it provides balance to the high Str melee weapons in the game, that cinematic moment of the little guy getting in the quick strikes they have in an attempt to take down a big maul wielding brute before(usually) being crushed is awesome.

  43. Feel No Pain. A marine shrugging off wounds seems awesome.

  44. Milestones everywhere at the moment - congrats to you.

As for favourite rule, I'd have to go 'Gets Hot'. I love plasma weapons and run them as much as I can. For nearly the entirety of 4th and th edition I ran a Space Marine Chaplain with Plasma Pistol as my HQ. He invariably went down in a ball of hot gas upon firing that pistol in each and every game. It was such a laugh in the end and became his thing. Those rare occasions he passed the test were a real treat.

  45. i'm going Chapter tactics.

    1. all of them are pretty good game wise if you choose your army right (no point taking sallie and no flamers!!)
    2. they stack brilliantly with the specific detachments (St5 flamers yes please)
    3. they give variety to your models. my marines can be formed and played with practically limitless variety

  46. At first I was like - he's giving away his Genestealers??? Noooooooooo!! But, when I read on I was relieved that you simply purchased too many of them (are you sure?), so phew! My own order will arrive this Saturday, so if I win I will gladly accept my brood brothers into the fold.

Interesting question regarding a favorite special rule hmmm. I had to think on that one for a while, but then it came to me. The rule that I really like best has got to be - RAMPAGE! I've discovered it first on my Dark Eldar Aberrations after getting back into 40K. In this instance I charged an Imperial Guard mob that was in the way, usually a rather desperate move as with the priest attached they simply won't break. But man, when you're charging, have an additional hand weapon and then add the attacks from rampage? I won't lie, it still took some turns but in the end the aberrations were standing on a whole mountain of dead foes! It didn't have a large impact on the game itself but man it was glorious :D

  48. Congrats on the milestone Michael - well done!

As for favourite special rule, gets hot is certainly up there. However I think I'd have to choose Rending. Nothing beats going for the wound roll and getting a big handful of sixes! Sometimes it makes me feel like I should apologise to my opponent.

  51. And They Shall Know No Fear. More for fluff than effect on the game - but given the horrors of the galaxy, the idea of the Emperor's finest having fear bred out of them is fitting!

Best wishes for the next year of Blogging.

  52. Congrats Michael, here's to more from the blog. Not sure what my favourite rule is, apart from just having fun. The most 'important rule' is a good one although I know I've spent far more time looking up obscure rules just so I know the answer rather than just solve it quickly and dice off a quick 50:50 result.

  53. Hello,

My favourite rule is Summoned to War (the Deathwing Strike Force's rule) as it syncs so well with the Ravenwing and is very fluffy. I imagine all of the planning, monastic chanting and praying to machines that must go into preparing for the assault.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Vortex. I enjoy the randomness of this rule. It can potentially bite me in the butt if the blast drifts the wrong way. It's terrifying to have three vortex blasts wandering aimlessly around the board.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Congrats on 2 years!

My favourite army specific rule is a hard one. Cult Ambush comes to mind but by itself it's actually not a great rule, you need the Cult Insurrection detachment for widespread Infiltrate, and Return to Shadows, to really make it work. Still, as system it's really amazing, and one of the most fun and fluffy ways to play an army.

For universal special rules I'd have to say Fleet, it's one of the few rules where I really notice a difference in how the unit feels on the tabletop.

  57. Congratulations on two years strong!
My favourite rule of years gone by was Lumbering Behemoth, making your Leman Russ an unstoppable platform of destruction, not bothered by such minor issues as a weapon being Ordinance. My favourite rule of current times however is Psychic Abomination! An outstanding example of how amazing Shadow in the Warp could have been.
My follow name may be max.bailey99

  58. My favourite special rule is Lucas the Tricksters rule where he gets to roll to remove his opponent when he dies, my friend always brings him along to games and I can never remember the rule but many a banter has been had with fully upgraded chapter masters and grand masters getting removed thanks to him!

  59. Well done on your second year and thanks for the giveaway

I'm just new to the hobby, but I'm enjoying your blog, particularly the battle reports which I've been working my way through. In terms of the special rule that most appeals to me, having just read through the main rules I would have to say the Monster Hunter one - I'm not too sure as to its gameplay efficacy, but the concept of a specialist group hunting down giant space abominations sounds really cool to me.

    1. Thanks for the kind words Lewis! Monster Hunter can be very effective in the game. Great for when you heavy weapons seems to keep bouncing off the enemy monstrous creatures.

  63. Kharn's 'The Betrayer' not only gives in game character to the model but also needs to be carefully considered as to using Kharn on his own or attached to a unit. I do find that opponents aren't quite as miffed when Kharn gets a good assault off against one of their units if he takes a few of his own with him at the same time. That said sometimes it doesn't take Kharn too long to run out of 'friends' to Betray :-)
