Old Stuff Day 2017- Blog Wars and Card Terrain

March 2nd is Old Stuff Day. For those of you that don't know, Old Stuff Day is a yearly event that I first saw on Warhammer 39,999. It is a chance to raid through the archives of your blog and dust off some articles that you haven't seen in a while or didn't get enough attention first time round.

You can find my post for last years Old Stuff Day, where I talked about White Dwarf and my very first battle report on the blog.

This year, I wanted to delve into the distant past of 2015 and highlight my battle report for my first game at Blog Wars 9. As I am coming up on my second year of blogging, it seemed right to highlight this, as Blog Wars 9 was one of the catalysts that led me to set up my blog in the first place. This game was against NafNaf (of Objective Secured fame) and is one of my favourite tournament games I have played. NafNaf was a blast to play against and we had a fantastic time with terrible dice rolls, terrible failed charges and my White Scars Bikers doing their best to run away from his Thunderwolf Cavalry for most of the game.

Formation-ing an opinion: The Evolution of Formations in 40k

Formations seem to have become an integral part of army building in 40k these days. Whether that is a good or bad thing is for each individual to decide, today I thought I would take you through my thoughts on formations and how I feel they influence the vast universe of warhammer 40,000 these days.

Not a free transport in sight......
Right off the bat, it is only fair to let you know dear reader, that I rarely use formations in 40k. This is not due to some particular stance on the use of formations, I just like the Combined Arms Detachment (CAD) and find it the easiest way to make up an army and what I have been used to for many years. The second issue is that even with my vast collection of models for some armies, I sometimes still struggle to have the basic requirements for many of the formations that I can field, so am limited in this respect too. The one exception to this is the Ravenwing Strike Force from the 7th edition Dark Angels codex. Being a big fan of Ravenwing (and bike) armies, I have utilised this formation a lot in recent months, even taking an all Ravenwing army to the recent Blog Wars X tournament using the formation and having a measure of success with it in my games.

So this is where these opinions and impressions come from, a player who generally doesn't use formations, but has some experience both playing with them and against them in a competitive and casual environment.

Also, a note of nomenclature. I tend to use Formations and Detachments interchangeably when talking about them. I know that there are differences between the two, but to me, the comments on one could be equally applied to the other.

The Early Days of Formations

Force Organisation Chart
You could argue that one of the earliest instances of the use of formations in 40k was the introduction of the Force Organisation Chart in 3rd edition 40k (I certainly would argue this, and since this is my article, I can do what I want!).

Hasn't changed much at all.
Prior to 3rd edition, armies were constructed using the percentage system. Your army would be composed of units/models based on the percentage of the points used, for example; 25% or more core units, up to 25% characters, etc.

When 40k was re-launched with 3rd edition in 1998, a new mechanic for army building was introduced- the Force Organisation Chart (now known as the Combined Arms Detachment). For the first time, units in an army were separated into 5 different types; HQ, Elites, Troops, Fast Attack and Heavy Support. Players constructed armies by selecting units from "slots" in the force organisation chart and calculating their points cost for the unit until the agreed upon points limit was reached. The only compulsory choices in your army were one HQ and two troops slots. This limit still applies today in the CAD.

The idea was to allow players to build themed forces, more representative of typical armies your fraction would be likely to field. Your army would consist of an HQ unit to lead the army and two units of core troops to provide the backbone of the army. Additional troops units could be used to bolster your force and more powerful units could be taken from the other slots, though in lesser numbers to represent their more limited availability.

Blog Wars X- My Ravenwing List

So, for Blog Wars X, I had decided to take an all Ravenwing army to the tournament. With Blog Wars being a friendlier type of tournament with no extreme lists (though that doesn't mean the games are not tough!), I thought I would take a more thematic list down to Stockport. With the new codex and the awesomeness that is Ravenwing, I put together a proposed list and went about playtesting the army to see how it would perform (for my efforts on this, check out my Battle Reports).

After several games testing the army, the list I have decided to go with is:

RAVENWING STRIKE FORCE
Sammael- on Corvex
Interrogator-Chaplain- Space Marine Bike, Mace of Redemption, Auspex, Meltabombs

5 Ravenwing Commnad Squad- Ravenwing Company Banner, Apothecary, Grenade Launcher

5 Black Knights- Grenade Launcher, Huntsmaster has Meltabombs
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 grav guns, sergeant has Meltabombs
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 plasma guns, sergeant has Meltabombs
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 meltaguns, sergeant has Meltabombs
Dark Talon- Rift Cannon, Two hurricane bolters, stasis bomb
Ravenwing Landspeeder- Multimelta, Typhoon Missile Launcher

RAVENWING SUPPORT SQUADRON
Ravenwing Darkshroud- Assault Cannon
3 Ravenwing Landspeeders- Heavy Bolters, Assault Cannons

Total= 1845 pts.

Not too many changes from my original list, only one significant one; swapping the Librarian for the Interrogator-Chaplain.

Battle Report 21- 1850 pts Ravenwing vs Chaos Space Marines

In this week's battle report, my Ravenwing army takes on a force of Chaos Space Marines, commanded by Thomas, as part of the Medusa IV campaign that I am running.

My Ravenwing army was one I am considering taking to Blog Wars X. It consists of:

RAVENWING STRIKE FORCE:
Sammael on Corvex (S)
Interrogator-Chaplain- Bike, Mace of Absolution, Auspex, Meltabombs (IC)
5 Ravenwing Command- Champion, Apothecary, Ravenwing banner, one grenade launcher (CS)
6 Black Knights- grenade launcher (BK)
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 Grav guns, sergeant with meltabombs (RB1)
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 Plasma guns, sergeant with meltabombs (RB2)
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 Meltaguns, sergeant with meltabombs (RB3)
Ravenwing Landspeeder- Multimelta, Typhoon missile launcher (RL)
Dark Talon (DT)

RAVENWING SUPPORT SQUADRON
Darkshroud- Assault Cannon
3 Ravenwing Landspeeders- Heavy Bolters, Assault Cannons (RSS)

I have swapped out the Librarian from my original army with an Interrogator-Chaplain. I feel this gives the Black Knights a bit more punch in combat with the Zealot re-rolls and I never had much success using the Librarian.

Hobby Costs June 2015

Hello and welcome! Today is the first of what is going to be a monthly ritual, where I detail the wargaming costs for the previous month. The purpose of this is to see exactly what I spend my money on when it comes to 40k (and fantasy to a lesser extent). Hopefully you may find this interesting, charting my progress as the total slowly mounts up and I sit in the corner and cry about how much I have actually spent. If not, please come back for the battle reports and random ramblings.

White Scars Army Review- blog wars tournament

Having reported on all my battles from Blog Wars 9, I thought I would take the time to review my army and how it performed during the day. If you need context for the review below, follow the links to get the battle reports for my battles against the Space Wolves, Necrons and Space Marines.

1. Chapter Master
My Chapter Master had the standard internet load out; bike, artificer armour, power fist, shield eternal and auspex. I liked the Chapter Master, his 2+ save, 3+ invulnerable and eternal warrior did field a lot of wounds that otherwise would have resulted in dead bikers. He managed to get into combat in all 3 games, but only in one did he make a difference. In the first game, he failed to kill my opponent's wolf lord (who was on one wound) and killed a few destroyers and immortals on my game against the necrons. In the third game, he managed to kill most of a unit of Sternguard and his orbital bombardment took out the enemy warlord and a Centurion. He only survived the final game, running off the board in the first and being killed in the second.
His warlord traits were very useful in the first and third game (infiltrate and fearless, respectively). Overall, he was a powerful unit, but I don't think I used him to optimal effectiveness. I tended to keep him out of combat, where he probably should have got stuck in more. I would probably take him again in the army.

Blog Wars Armies on Display

There were some fantastic armies on display for blog wars 9. Some examples are shown below (albeit in my shoddy photography skills).

First up was Dave Weston's amazing tyranid army. Dave ended up taking the prize for best army and best character. You can check out more of his army on his blog.

Blog Wars Battle Report 3- Howling Griffons Space Marines

When I arrived in Stockport for blog wars on Friday, I met up with Luke, Peter and Daniel for some practice games. Luke and I squared off against one another as he wanted some practice with the Maelstrom mission against a fast moving force. It was a fantastic game, which I will write up at a future point.
Imagine my surprise when I turned up for my third game on table 8 (luckily, I didn't have to move!) and it was against Luke's great Howling Griffons Space Marines army. This was going to be really interesting. We both knew what to expect from each other's armies and had a very close first game against one another, would this game turn out the same?

White Scars advance.
Luke's army consisted of:
Inquisitor Coteaz (C)
Level 1 Librarian (L)
3 Grav Centurions (Cent)
Thunderfire cannon and techmarine (TC)
4 Bikers- 2 grav guns (B)
5 Scouts- Sniper rifles and camo cloaks (S)
5 Devastators- Lascannon and 3 Missile Launchers (D1 and D2)
2 units of 5 Sternguard- Combi-meltas (S1 and S2) in drop pod (DP1)
2 units of 5 Sternguard- Combi-meltas  (S3 and S4) in drop pod (DP3)
2 units of 5 tactical marines- one with meltagun  (T3 and T3) in drop pod (DP2)
2 units of 5 tactical marines- one with missile laucher (T1 and T2)

His warlord trait game +1 to seize the initiative and re-roll of reserve rolls (which we both forgot about). In addition to Coteaz and his re-roll, the chances of seizing were quite high. A lot of small units for grabbing objectives and some serious firepower.

Blog Wars Battle Report Game 2- Necrons

Game two was against Ben’s Necrons in a Decurion detachment on table 8. I have not played Necrons since the new codex came out, but had read all about the durability of the Decurion detachment, so was expecting a tough match.
The mission was a modification of The Relic. There were 3 objectives; one in the centre of the table and one in each of our deployment zones. Your own objective was worth 5 points, the centre was worth 10 points and your opponents was worth 15.

Trouble comes this way.

Ben’s army consisted of:
2 units of wraiths (W1 and W2)
two units of flayed ones (FO1 and FO2)
a unit of necron warriors (NW)
two tomb spiders (TS1 and TS2)
two units of scarabs (S1 and S2)
two units of immortals (I1 and I2)
a unit of destroyers (D)
a unit of Lynchguard (L) and Nemesor (N).
Seeing them arrayed, that was a whole heap of necrons to try and kill.

Blog Wars Battle Report Game 1- Space Wolves

I set off early in the am to the distant land of Stockport. I had a car packed with mighty warriors, eager to sell their lives for victory, along with a long drive's supply of power ballads (I wanna know what love is!) and pockets full of my strange, foreign money (the most fun you can have in England is trying to buy things with Scottish money, I occasionally throw in monopoly money, just to see if they notice). This was my first foray to Blog Wars and I was looking forward to seeing how I got on. My last tournament gave me one win, one loss and one draw, I was eager to see how my fortune would change.

Unfortunately, due to the time constraints of the tournament, I was unable to take sufficient notes for a full battle report, but will give an overview of the battle with plenty of photos.
The mission was essentially kill points. You scored a number of blood points proportional to how much of the enemy army you destroyed (a unit or model reduced to 50% models or wounds/hull points was worth half) and a bonus for killing the special character, as well as the secondary objectives

Our forces clash.
My first game was against Nathaniel (NafNaf from Objective Secured) and his thunderwolf cavalry heavy Space Wolves army (Blue in maps). His fantastic looking army (along with some lovely conversions) consisted of:

Two units of 5 thunderwolf cavalry- with wolves and storm shields (T1 and T2)
One Wolfguard battle leader on thunderwolf (WBL)
Two Iron Priests on Thunderwolf (IP1 and IP2)
Tactical squad (TM1) with two plasma guns in rhino (R)
Tactical squad (TM2) with two meltaguns and combi-melta in drop pod (DP2)
Dreadnought (D)- blizzard shield and great axe in drop pod (DP3)
Arjac Rockfist (A) and 4 terminators (T)- mix of thunder hammers, storm shields and combi-meltas in drop pod (DP1).

Back from Blog Wars

Got back today from Blog wars 9 (that was a long, long drive!). Had a fantastic weekend of gaming, lots of excitement and close, harrowing games. It was a great event that was very well run and very enjoyable. Well done to Alex (from From the Fang) for putting on such a brilliant tournament.

Many thanks to my opponents on the day, all were a pleasure to play against. I will be posting photos and battle overviews from my games over the next couple of weeks, as well as photos from the armies that were on display.

It was nice getting to meet everyone whose blogs I have been following for a long time, I can now put faces to a lot of the names. I also got some nice compliments on my army, objective markers and the blog, which was definitely appreciated.

Many thanks to Luke, Peter and Daniel for keeping me company and for the practice game on Friday night (see Luke, who said that meeting up with a random guy you met on the internet always turns out badly?).

Hopefully, I will be able to make the journey for blog wars 10 in November.

Blog Wars Bound!

Today is blog wars 9! My car is packed with a display board, dice, books and White Scars eager for battle.
Good luck to everyone for the event today, sorry in advance for my surly pouting as your army stomps across mine with as much resistance as polystyrene to spray paint.

White Scars blog wars army- updated

After a flurry of painting in the past few weeks, I finally managed to get my army for blog wars finished. The army has seen some modification from my previous post, thanks to some playtesting and advice from some fellow gamers (many thanks to the fine folks on 40k Addicts facebook group for their tips).

Blog wars army arrayed for battle.

White Scars Chapter Master

I managed to get a great deal of painting done last week and at the weekend, meaning that I have finished my blog wars army. Tournaments act as a great deadline for getting stuff painted quickly. With a definitive date to get everything finished by, models don't sit languishing undercoated in a box for months/years. I'll post the completed units and army in the following week (got to spread that content out somehow!).
Last week, I was able to complete the painting on my newly assembled Chapter Master on bike.

After a white undercoat, the model was give an Agrax Earthshade wash, followed by Ulthuan Grey Drybrushing.

Then a drybrushing of White Scar (of course!).

The red lining was given a Basecoat of Mephiston Red, followed by a Carroburg Crimson wash, then Evil Sunz red highlight.

The finished Chapter Master.

I am quite happy with how he turned out. I spent a bit more time on the red lining of the biker to make it look neater than my previous attempts. As I have said previously, I am never going to be a Golden Demon standard painter (I just don't have the skill or patience), but I like getting things painted to a decent tabletop standard.
The gold on the iron halo and backpack help him to stand out from the other bikers on the battlefield. Overall, the army is coming together quite nicely.

White Scars blog wars army

I thought I would go through my choices for my blog wars white scars army and why I chose them.
Blog wars requires you to take a special character, with White Scars there is only one choice; Khan. Being forced to take Khan is not really a disadvantage. He provides the ability to take bike squads as troops units when mounted on a bike, and provides an awesome ability that gives all bike units and units with dedicated transports Scout, a very powerful ability that I have had a lot of fun with.

KHAAAAAAAN! (Cause you've never heard that before)

White Scars WIP- Scouts and Chapter Master

Over the last week I got the painting on the scouts finished. I'm happy with the finish on these, when I have previously painted scouts they tended to come out very messy.

White Scars WIP 2

With a holiday weekend here in the UK, I got a chance to get some more work done on finishing my White Scars army for blog wars.
I finished off the third bike squad armed with meltaguns. Most of the painting was finished from last time I was working on them, I took the opportunity to clean up some of the red lines on the bikes as I thought they looked a bit sloppy when I saw the photos of them last time. The bases were flocked to match my gaming mat (and much of my terrain) and the transfers were applied to the squad.

White Scars WIP

I have spent this last week trying to get my White Scars army completed for the upcoming Blog Wars 9. This past week I have been focusing on the Sternguard veterans and the third bike squad.
Sternguard Veterans, about half way done.

Almost completed.

Blog wars to do list

I am attending Blog Wars (http://fromthefang.blogspot.co.uk/p/blog-wars-9-maelstrom-of-battle.html) for the first time this year. I haven't been to a tournament since a Games Workshop 1500 pts tournament in Edinburgh many, many years ago, so am looking forward to it.

I decided to bring my newest army, the White Scars. Looking at the missions, I don't think my Guard have enough mobility to do well in some of them, especially the maelstrom type mission. I haven't played Orks too much since the new codex came out, I dislike the new mob rule table, I think it is too penalising for not a lot of benefit compared to the old mob rule. Also, my most regular opponent is and Eldar player and most of our games were over by turn 2, it was not a fun game for either of us. I thought about my Dark Angels, but as has been for the last couple of codexes, the Dark Angels match up poorly against the Marine codex.

So White Scars it is. The only problem is that this is a relatively new army (I only started them in February, the reasons why I'll get into in a future post), so I have a lot of work to do to get them up to 1850 pts. Most of the models I want to take are assembled, I just need to get the painting done. Fortunately, last night was quite nice and still light out when I got home, so I was able to get most of the undercoating done. The to do list for paining is as follows:

1. Khan on bike
2. Chapter master on bike (still to be assembled)
3. Unit of 5 scouts
4. Landspeeder Storm
5. Unit of 5 bikers
6. Attack Bike
7. Unit of 10 Sternguard Veterans

I only have about 6 weeks to get them done, so I had better get started!
