Dark Artisan Open ITC Tournament: Game 3- Deathwatch vs Blood Angels

My third game of the Dark Artisan ITC tournament saw my Deathwatch take on Chris' Blood Angels army in the Strategic Gamble maelstrom mission.

In this mission, you draw three cards per turn. You can choose to discard two of your cards and draw one more. If you can score this in your turn, it is worth double the number of points.

My army consisted of:
Battalion Detachment
Watch Captain- Castellan of the Black Vault (warlord trait), Jump Pack, Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer
Watch Master- Guardian Spear, the Tome of Ectoclades
5 Intercessors- Bolt Rifles, Bolt Pistols
5 Intercessors- Bolt Rifles, Bolt Pistols
Kill Team 1- 7 Veterans- Storm Bolters, Chainswords, 2 Storm Shields, Biker with Twin Bolter, Chainsword, Vanguard Veteran with Storm Shield and Bolt Pistol, Terminator with Power Fist and Storm Bolter
Kill Team 2- 7 Veterans- 3 Combi-Meltas, Meltagun, Chainswords, 3 Storm Shields, Biker with Twin Bolter, Chainsword, Vanguard Veteran with Chainsword and Bolt Pistol, Terminator with Power Fist and Storm Bolter
5 Veterans- 2 Missile Launchers, Storm Shield, 3 Stalker Bolters, Chainswords
5 Veterans- 2 Missile Launchers, Heavy Bolter, 2 Stalker Bolters, Chainswords

Librarian- Jump Pack, Force Sword, Bolt Pistol, Null Zone, Might of Heroes

3 Bikers- Twin Bolters, Chainswords, Sergeant has Storm Bolter and Storm Shield, Teleport Homer
3 Bikers- Twin Bolters, Chainswords, Teleport Homer

A fairly standard force for my Deathwatch. I decided to take two full Kill Teams, with a Terminator, Vanguard Veteran and Biker in each one to give me lots of options for falling back from combat and still staying active. I also added a couple of Veteran squads with Missile Launchers and Stalker Bolters for long range firepower, as well as a single Heavy Bolter to use the Hellfire Shells stratagem, and a Razorback for some anti-tank firepower.

I took the Outrider for the extra CP. I decided to try the Librarian, as his powers would be of use to the Watch Captain. I took three units of Bikers. These should be useful for going after objectives and adding some strong firepower to the army.

London GT Battle Report: Game 2- Dark Angels vs Imperial Soup

Game 2 of the London GT saw my Dark Angels take on a mixed force of Space Marines, including Blood Angels, Raven Guard and Adeptus Custodes, commanded by Phil. This was my first time taking on the dreaded Custodes Shield Captains, so I was interested to see what they could do.

The Eternal War mission was No Mercy, so kill points for each enemy unit destroyed. The Maelstrom of War mission was Spoils of war. This gives you three tactical objective cards per turn, you cannot discard "Secure Objective X" cards and can steal your opponent's "Secure Objective X" cards. We were using Dawn of War deployment.

My army consisted of:
Battalion Detachment
Azrael (Az)
Primaris Lieutenant- Master-crafted Auto Bolt Rifle (L)
Primaris Ancient- Bolt Rifle (An)

Battle Report 104- 2000 pts Deathwatch vs Blood Angels

This week's battle report sees my Deathwatch take on Andy's Blood Angels in a straight up, Kill Points slug fest.

Andy and I played the No Mercy mission for our 2000 pts game at the Newcastle Warlords gaming club. Andy was new to the club, so I was hoping he would have fun playing against both my Deathwatch and my fickle dice rolling!

My army consisted of:
Battalion Detachment
Watch Master- Guardian Spear (W)
Watch Captain- Jump Pack, Xenophase Blade, Bolt Pistol (W)
Kill Team 1- Sergeant with Power Sword, Black Shield with Power Sword, 3 Veterans, 2 Frag Cannons, Vanguard Veteran with Pair Lightning Claws, Deathwatch Biker with Teleport Homer (KT1)
Kill Team 2- 5 Veterans with 2 Frag Cannons and 2 Shotguns (KT2)
Kill Team 3- 5 Veterans with Meltagun, 3 Combi-meltas (KT3)
Kill Team 4- 5 Veterans with 5 Stalker Pattern Boltguns (KT4)
Kill Team 5- 5 Veterans, Terminator with Power Fist, Storm Bolter and Cyclone Missile Launcher (KT5)
Rhino- Storm Bolter (R1)
Rhino- Storm Bolter (R2)
5 Vanguard Veterans- 2 pairs Lightning Claws, 2 Heavy Thunder Hammers (VV)
4 Bikers- Teleport Homer, Power Axe, Power Maul, 2 Power Swords (DB1)
4 Bikers- Teleport Homer, Power Maul, 3 Power Swords (DB2)
Corvus Blackstar- Twin Assault Cannon, 2 Stormstrike Missiles, Hurricane Bolter, Auspex Array (CB)

6 Command Points

After my last game, I decided to change up my army. I added a couple of Frag Cannons to the squad in the Corvus Blackstar for some added firepower, as well as adding a Vanguard Veteran and Biker to the squad. This would allow me to fall back and still shoot and assault in my turn, a pretty powerful combo.
I also added some much needed anti-tank firepower with a squad of Veterans armed with Melta weapons. These would go in the Rhino to get them up the field quickly. The other squad had two Frag Cannons in another Rhino.
I also had two squads for objective holding; one with Stalker Bolters and another with normal Bolters and a Terminator with Cyclone Missile Launcher for some more tank-hunting capabilities.

I also added a Captain with a Jump Pack. This would give the second character some much needed mobility. I figured I could use him with the Bikers or with the Meltaguns to give me some re-rolls for shooting. The Watch Master would go in the Corvus with the squad, for those important re-rolls. He was my Warlord and took the ignore wounds on a 6+ trait.

Finally, I took two squads of four Bikers and a Corvus Blackstar. The Bikers came with a range of Power Weapons for dealing with different squads.

Fluffageddon Battle Report 1- Ravenwing vs Blood Angels

Welcome to the first battle report from my games at Fluffageddon 2016. The tournament was billed as a more relaxed event with a moderate degree of comp and emphasis on building an army that fit with the background of the relevant race.

Overall, the tournament was good fun. I got some really nice compliments on my army, which was great considering some of the standard of painting there. There were a few issues though that I will get to in a later post, but it was generally a fun day.

My first game saw my Ravenwing army take on Tom and his Blood Angels in the Contact Lost Maelstrom mission (3 cards per turn).

My army consisted of:
Ravenwing Strike Force
Interrogator-Chaplain- Bike, Meltabombs, Auspex, Mace of Redemption (with CS)
5 Ravenwing Command Squad- Ravenwing Banner, Apothecary, Grenade Launcher (CS)
6 Black Knights- Meltabombs, Grenade Launcher (BK)
6 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 Grav Guns, Sergeant with Meltabombs and Power Sword (RB1)
6 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 Meltaguns, Sergeant with Meltabombs and Power Fist (RB2 and RB3)
Attack Bike- Heavy Bolter (AB)
Landspeeder- Multi-melta, Typhoon Missile Launcher (L)

Ravenwing Support Squadron
Darkshroud- Assault Cannon (SS)
3 Landspeeders- Assault Cannons, Heavy Bolters

My warlord trait gave the Chaplain and his unit furious charge. You can find some of the army restrictions and my thoughts on my list in my previous post.

Hero for a Day- the lost game

I recently attended a 24 hour gaming charity event, run by Nick from The Burning Eye, called Hero for a Day.
The event was due to feature 8 games of 40k over a 24 hour period. The event was a lot of fun and raised a lot of money for a great cause.

After seven games of 40k, the Defender's team (the team I was on) was so far ahead that the final game would have no influence on the result. Rather than play the same people again, we decided to do a free for all and I ended up playing against Rob (30Kplus40K) and his Blood Angels.

Unfortunately, after being up for almost 45 hours at this point, I was starting to get a bit grumpy and tired. We set up and started the game, but only got to about turn 2 before I finally gave in. As a result, I never got the full battle report to write here, but I did take a bunch of photos of the game. I thought I would share the photos here for those that were interested.

I'm hoping that with my recent move to Newcastle, I can arrange to meet up with Rob once more (possibly at Warhammer World) to get a proper game against him at some point. Till then, I hope you enjoy the photos.

Hero for a Day: Game 6- White Scars/Blood Angels vs Chaos Space Marines/Sisters of Battle

Game 6 of Hero for a Day was another doubles game. This time, I was paired up with Rob (of 30Kplus40K fame) and his amazing Death Company Blood Angels army. We would be facing Jack with his Sisters of Battle and James with his Chaos Space Marines.

This mission was "Ambush". Rob and I would need to deploy in the centre of the board, at least 12" from all four table sides. The Attackers (Jack and James) would then deploy second, within 12" of any board edge. For this game, victory points were awarded for each unit destroyed; HQ units were worth 3 pts. Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support units were worth 2 points each, Troops were worth 1 point each. The secondary objectives were Slay the Warlord and First Strike (like First Blood, but could be scored by both players, but only on turn 1).

My army consisted of:
Khan- Moondrakkan (with B3)
5 Bikers- Meltabombs, 2 Grav Guns (B1)
5 Bikers- Meltabombs, 2 Grav Guns (B2)
5 Bikers- Meltabombs, 2 Meltaguns (B2)
6 Scout Bikers- Meltabombs, 2 Grenade Launchers (SB)
5 Scouts- Bolters, Meltabombs (S)
Landspeeder Storm (LS)

Khan is my warlord and gave me Scout.

Dundee 40k Tournament after action report

On 24th May, Dundee Wargames held a one day 40k tournament that I was fortunate enough to attend. I thought I would write up my thoughts on my games (what worked and what could be improved).
The format was three games of 1500 pts chosen from up to two detachments. There were three different missions using a mixture of eternal war and maelstrom objectives. I decided to run my blog wars army minus the Chapter Master and Scouts to bring it down to size.
My army arrayed for battle.

The army was:
Kor’sarro Khan on Moondakken
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs
5 Bikers- 2 x meltaguns, sergeant with meltabombs
10 tactical marines- Meltagun, sergeant with combi-melta and meltabombs in drop pod
10 devastator marines- 4 missile launchers, with Rhino
Attack Bike with Multimelta
Attack Bike with Multimelta
3 Centurions- 3 grav cannons and grav amps
Stormtalon
