EDIT: This competition is now closed.
With the blog turning one year old, I have decided to join Rob at "From the Horus Heresy to Infinity and Beyond" and Dave from "Confessions from a 40k addict" in doing a prize give away. After rummaging around my figure collection, I was able to come up with a Space Marine Battle Demi-Company that I could part with.

One entrant will be picked at random and will win the battle demi-company shown in the photos in this post. Entrants are allowed from anywhere in the globe and are limited to a single entry each.
There is no fee for entering this competition, but I would like to encourage everyone to visit the "Hero for a Day" page using the link provided and donate for this great cause. Even just a pound or two would be gladly welcomed I am sure.

Orks, because WAAAAAGH!
ReplyDeleteOf course, no other reason required!
DeleteI love the Ultramarines because I get my jollies at the intersection of Roman iconography and the color blue.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a fantastic giveaway, and a great idea! Thanks also for the shout out for Hero for a Day, it really is a good cause.
ReplyDeleteAs for my vote, it has to go to the Dark Eldar, the sheer scale of their ambition, selfishness and indulgence knows no bounds - no-one else in the galaxy would have the temerity to encourage an attack by the space marines on their rivals, nor steal off with a few suns just because they can. If you're looking for the epitome of grim dark, I think a race that is so self indulgent they created the eye of terror fits the bill, and the fact that that event didn't discourage the Dark Eldar from their indulgence probably says even more about them!
No problem Nick, hopefully it will lead to a few more donations!
DeleteI've never heard the Dark Eldar described that way before. It has certainly helped my opinion of them!
It's one of my favourite parts of the DE back story, they were ruled by noble houses at the time, and Vect wasn't a noble, so he attacked and captured a salamanders cruiser (leaving all the crew alive, including a librarian), and delivered it to one of the nobles as a prize. Surprise surprise the space marines tracked the librarian's distress call to where it had been left and destroyed the noble houses, thus leaving a power vacuum for Vect to fill and rule Commorragh. Evil Genius!
DeleteI appreciate the person who linked this, and i appreciate that your doing this. I have a daughter and we game together, but unfortantly she doesnt have a full army to play with, she only have 500 pionts. This would be amazing for her. and it would be pink, how many pink armys are there??
DeleteI forgot my favorite army!~ Raven Guard, there so flavourfull and i love using assult troops!!!
DeleteI love my guardsmen as its feels so much more relatble then most armies and nothing better then my lovely sergents killing monsterious creatures for God knows what reason. Other then that the game unites my group and I feel the energy is awesome!
ReplyDeleteLove the charity initiative, good luck everyone with the random selection!

Guard are one of my favourite armies too!
DeleteYeah, I hope people donate to Nick's cause, its such a good idea for a campaign day!
I found this blog a bit ago through reddit and again reddit has sent me here.
ReplyDeleteAs a new player I love the space wolves for all the wrong reasons I've been told. I love wolves and shiny things. I started a bit before the wulfen codex came out and it seemed only natural I picked the right choice. So fate mixed with shiny, seems like a good favorite pick to me.
Also it's selfish but I really hope I win, this army could help me a ton and I hope to be able to play a big list one day like everyone I know.
Remember to sign up to follow the blog "Unknown" if you want a chance to win (as I wouldn't know who had won otherwise if you are lucky enough to be drawn!).
DeleteCount me in!
ReplyDeleteBest army... Imperial Fists! They're bad ass, hard as nails, slightly nuts, and let's face it, anyone who fights dressed head to foot in bright yellow is worthy of anyone's respect!
"What colour would you like your armour to be, oh mighty Dorn?"
Delete"Yellow"
"Ah, yes. A nice subtle, sand colour. Excellent camouflage for our desert world battles"
"No, I want bright yellow. The kind that can be seen for miles in every direction"
"........"
"And throw in some bright red trim too while you're at it"
Hmm, now that you say this, it reminds of the bit from Iron Man where he's deciding on the suit colour. Makes me like them a little bit more that!

I love the Imperial Guard (or you might call it the Astra Militarum) because :
ReplyDelete- Tanks ;
- the sheer diversity of the looks of the models, from Cadian to Kriegans, to Elyseans, to Vostroyans, Mordians, Valhallans, Catachans etc. There is a flavour of guardsman for everyone ;
- Even bigger tanks with even more guns ;
- They are regular humans facing the horrors of the galaxy with just a flak jacket, a lasgun and the man standing next to them (and faith in the God Emperor) ;
- Did I mention I like tanks?
I always liked Eldar for their lore and looks. Ulthwe is my favorite faction from the Eldar race.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway and thanks for making this.
Eldar have some very cool background and some amazing models. Just a shame they get so much hate for having a brilliant codex.
DeleteNo problem, best of luck.
Orcs - Speed, Big guns and Checkers !!!
ReplyDeleteThe Imperial Fist space marines, not only for the sweet mustard yellow armour, belt because when you need someone to hold the line, to fight and prevail against the foes of the imperium, you get the Sentinels of Terra. Plus, Rogal Dorn is the best primarch!
ReplyDeleteYou may say, it is impossible for a man to become like the Machine. And I would reply, that only the smallest mind strives to comprehend its limits.
ReplyDeleteThe Omnissiah lives as I live and the will of the machine will endure the desires of the flesh.
Fear not the ravages of time, but the decay of rust. Blessed be the Omnissiah and all who praise his name.
Very cool Rob!
DeleteDark Angels
ReplyDeleteAlways liked their backstory and the look of the figures with their capes and just started an army recently with the Dark Vengeance set so this figures would be a nice addition.
Really love tyranids because they are always hungry and consume worlds for a snack...
ReplyDeleteNecrons
ReplyDeleteBecause when my friends come over and see my miniatures, they always ask what those little robot zombies are!
Honestly, they're they coolest looking faction along with the Tyranids. At least Necrons are awesomely competitive when it comes to playing 40k.

ReplyDeleteORK. FEAR THE WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG.
ReplyDeleteSpace Wolves
ReplyDeleteVikings, wolves and runes.
These are some of the reasons why I find the SW as the most cruel and ruthless race in the 40k . My background is the biggest reason for the choice of the Space Wolves is that I was born in Sweden and our tradition and culture of the Vikings and Valhall makes you feel proud of their background , and they want to live among the mighty warriors and eat among the Norse gods for man has died in battle.
They are born with an ax in his hand , and they die with an ax in his hand.
Imagine after your honorable death in combat - gets to spent the rest of its life in Valhalla with his brothers and sisters to fight on the day and celebrate at night with food and beer!
Raven Guard.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of scouting around, taking a shot at the most tactical sound target and removing it with precision is something I can get behind, especially considering the normally bulky and loud nature of marines.
Dark Eldar.
ReplyDeleteThose Vect stories!
p.s. never ally with Eldar!
Hear, Hear!
DeleteI love Astra militarum you can never end to throw bodies and to let them die for the MIGHTY EMPEROR!
ReplyDeleteI love myself some Raven guard space marines. Stealthy, shooty, and jet packs (in my armies). Also watching people's faces when I assassinate someone important in their army.

ReplyDeleteIt has to be the Space Wolves. Fenrisian ale, beards, and the Allfather be praised!
ReplyDeleteRemember to sign up "unknown", I don't know who you are otherwise!
DeleteI adore the Imperial Guard.
ReplyDeleteIt's my first army (I've only been playing for a month) and I love the fluff of it, I've spent entire afternoons painting my squads of guardsmen and battling them on Thursdays at my local league. I write tons of fluff for my armies and each battle is like a miniature campaign to me, with everything written in and (hopefully) making sense.
Excellent, welcome to 40k! Guard are great, such an iconic part of the 40k universe.

ReplyDeleteFor The Greater Good! Tau has an emphasis on coordination and technology which is right up my alley. We might be young and naive but as the great Master of The Undying Spirit once said "Our Conquest is inevitable, our ascension a matter of time. Let none who are wise deny our destiny."
ReplyDeleteGrey knights are my favourite. I love idea of a hyper elite force taskef with only protecting the imperium from chaos.
ReplyDeleteSPEEEEEEEHHHHSS MUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEHNS!
ReplyDeleteFor me it's always been space marines. I'm a die hard Ultramarines fan, through and through, and as the first miniature army I ever built and painted, they'll always have a special place in my heart. They're also really, really fun to paint.
Dark Angels: I just kind of fell into them with the Dark Vengeance set and it was like fate. The synergy found when the various 'Wings' work together is a thing of beauty. I like being able to rush forward with my ravenwing units one time and then the next game bombard my opponent with Greenwing in drop pods. Using basically the same list I can change up my tactic to fit the situation. We may not be the most competitive chapter at the moment and yes, our dudes look like armoured Christmas Trees; they can be great with the right strategy.
ReplyDeleteThey're also fun as hell to paint and once painted they look dynamic on the table with their 3 colour schemes.
I can't fix it to not say unknown but the above is also me. Friggin' phone!

DeleteHeck yeah! I think those marines want to be Dark Angels...
ReplyDeleteAn incredibly generous giveaway on a really cool blog! :)
ReplyDeleteNecrons are my favourite army and have been ever since I picked up one of the little metal figures when I was very young.
Now I'm recently back into 40K, almost 15 years later, I find their new fluff absolutely fascinating! I think my favourite concept of the fluff is their age and how they caused such an impact so very long ago!
Much appreciated!
DeleteAwesome stuff dude, very generous.
ReplyDeleteFave army is prob Dark Eldar (at the mo anyway, I switch between those and SW's for my affection depending on what I am excited by at the time). Their fluff is awesome, I love the models and all the conversion opportunities it brings
Cheers dude!
DeleteI must say, your carnival depends to be a new army all to itself. Amazing conversions and brilliant paint job.
Iron Warriors.
ReplyDeleteTheir look, iconography, philosophy and ruthless will to get the job done.
Not to mention Perturabo, a man of raw intelligence forced to change his ways all because the false-Emperor ordered him too. I relate with no other Primarch due to him being misunderstood and shunned by the others.
For some reason it came up as unknown :P
DeleteLove the Tau because Socialist Gundams.
ReplyDeleteAwesome user name!
DeleteUltramarines, because I love them boyscouts in blue!
ReplyDeleteWe all appreciate you doing this, it really is awesome! My favorite 40k army has got to be Space Marines, Personally I really like the Imperial Fists and Blood Ravens. Dawn of War has got me hooked on those Ravens.. lol.
ReplyDeleteNo problem! Always glad to give something back. Please take a look at Nick's charity event and donate if you can.
DeleteChaos Space Marines! Specifically Word Bearers. Their zeal to Chaos Undivided makes for interesting reading.
ReplyDeletePlease remember to sign up and comment with who you are. Can't know who you are if you are unknown!
DeleteMy favorite army to play is the Tau. I've always been a Gundam fan, and the Tau allow me to field mecha to my hearts content.
ReplyDeletePlease remember to sign up and comment with who you are. Can't know who you are if you are unknown!
DeleteCongrats on your achievement! I'm a passionate reader of your blog, though I don't own an army (yet!). I used to play Fantasy in 5th ed. and I've come close to start a 40k army recently, but never have time to commit.
ReplyDeleteFavourite army: part of me wants to say Tau, since that's the first 40k army which caught my interest back in the day when I was playing Fantasy and read White Dwarf. However over the last year I followed the new Tau releases and I've grown quite disillusioned about them. Then I at the moment I say White Scars, because they're fast, badass, and have rules which pair well with their background.
Keep it up!
albp
Thanks, much appreciated. I only keep going as people are happy to read and contribute.
DeleteWhite Scars are an amazing army. Very competitive and look amazing (if you manage to paint the white to a decent standard, very difficult).
*as long as people are happy to read and contribute*

ReplyDeleteIm a big fan of Space Marines, but specifically, the blood angels! They were my first army and I'll always have a soft spot for them (they're also who I am playing right now!)

ReplyDeletePurge the Heretic!
(Ignore the other post, it broke the login for some reason >.>)
I'm going to go with something old-school, the Daemonhunters (who were actually my first army)
ReplyDeleteThe Terminators had so much awesome detail on the metal models, and Coteaz/Stern were amazing special characters, but the main draw to me was the tiny model count. You had to be ridiculously tactical over time as the Codex kept getting left behind by edition updates and such. But the flavour was good enough that I still thought them amazing
Chaos Daemons, because randomness and FUN*
ReplyDeleteCrimson fists because Pedro is a badass and sentinels of terra twin linked rule is amazing.
ReplyDeleteThousand sons, just a shame that they're not that good right now, maybe someday. Keep it up really enjoying reading your blog.
ReplyDeleteCrimson Fists are my main army, I think I originally choose them based on their colors. If I won this demi-company, I'd probably paint them as Sons of Medusa, for a fun ally-force, or readily available enemy army for guests to play with.
ReplyDeleteSo what's up with Blogspot and 40k? There's quite a scene on these blog platforms, but apparently not others. I run @40ktoday, trying to link to content strongly related to 40k the day of it's creation. 90% of content is generated by 10% of sources (click baity sites), but the links to blogspot are mixed in to the tweet feed. Blogspot sites usually offer the deepest 40k content due to bloggers and their expositive nature.
ReplyDeleteSooooo my question is why did y'all discover Blogspot? Is their a rival/antonymic counter blogger group on Blogger? Does anybody use LiveJournal?
I think that BlogSpot is the address for Blogger sites. I write this on Blogger and my address has BlogSpot in it.
DeleteWhen I looked into starting the blog, it appeared that most people use Blogger or WordPress. I went with blogger simply cause it was free and a lot of the sites I was reading used it. I actually follow @40ktoday, its a really neat idea. It's a shame that the major clickbaity sites get most of the attention.
I think that BlogSpot sites offer the deepest content as they are generally written by people with a passion for the hobby who want to share their work and ideas. Not that the other sites are not passionate about 40k, but I don't rely on this to make my living or have to worry about getting lots of views for advertising.
Chaos Space Marines would have to be my favorite. Despite them being known to have a terrible codex I still find a lot of fun running around with my dirty heretics. I find great joy when Kharne wipes a whole squad of terminators even before any bezerkerz get a chance to swing or that squad of plague marines sitting on an objective in cover that just wont seem to ever die. In the good or the bad they just are fun to play even when your 200 point Chaos Lord wins a challenged and gets turned into a spawn. Every game I got mopped up just makes the games I do win even better.
ReplyDeleteDark Angels because of there simplicity but still cooler than default space marines imo. Also my favorite color is green :)
ReplyDeleteI simply love the space marines as they were my first army and I haven't parted with them since but they are dude a serious upgrade so this would be amazing. I do however have a fascination with the Imperial Guard as I like all the links to WW2 soldiers.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I have been a arms-length admirer of Warhammer 40K, never having enough money at one time to fully dive into the "plastic crack kingdom". However, my favorite army has always been the Tau. Practicality, valor, and unity are all used as tools to serve the greater good in their bushido culture. Not to mention how advanced, powerful, and vast their empire has grown in such a small amount of time. They are re-donk-ulous
ReplyDeleteMike,I'd like to enter, but I don't really want the models if I win. I have way to many space marines already! If I win, could they be sold or raffled for the hero for a day tourney? If that's ok?
ReplyDeleteMy fave army is probably the rout. The sons of Russ. My first true army will always hold dear in my heart!
Congrats on the birthday! Here's to many more!
No problem!
DeleteSpace Marines for me; always have been my favourite from the moment my mum's cousin showed me and his son the Dark Angels 3rd Ed codex. The idea of these corageous warriors standing firm against aliens and deamons sparked something in me. I started to read more books, I started to save up all my pocket money, any chance I got I would drag my mum in to the local Games Workshop to look at the latest models in the cabinet and, not long after my tenth birthday, I bought my very own models. I thought long adn hard about what I wanted; although I loved the idea of the big tough tanks of the Imperial Guard, or the flying Eldar, seeing units of models in Power and Terminator Armour arrayed on the table still drew me back to the artwork on the front of that DA codex. It didn't hurt that the 3rd Ed started box had everything I needed apart from the Space Marine Codex to start playing the game either!
ReplyDeleteI also loved the idea of creating my own chapter; forging heroes and telling stories no one else in the world was telling. Right from the outset, I created the Ocea-marines. Bad name, bad colour scheme. Kinda boring because everyone thought they were ultramarines I had painted wrong. They lasted about 8-9 months. Then came the Brotherhood of Fire. Although they have had something of a rebranding (the colourscheme devised by an 11 year old was only ever going to look so good, no matter how good my painting skill got!) I've been collecting them continuously for over 18 years now. Sure I have flirted with other armies (I've got a whole Armoured Company of Imperial Guard, with all forms of support, and a pretty unique Ork army... Even the beginnings of a pre-heresy Dark Angels force to bring things full circle!) But my Space Marines, MY Brotherhood Of Fire, will always hold a special place in my heart and games cabinet.
Hi!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I like (and play) Blood angels alot and quite dedicated in that, I really love the Grey knights/Daemonhunters the way they were in 4-th edition.
They are the sheer epitome of 40k - they are grey and they are knights, the man wandering in darkness of the univerese fighting the unknown, defending humanity and corruptless warriors.
No wonder that Matt Ward made them so over the top) although I think it hurt the whole conception.
Found your blog because of retro-thoughts and evolving-40k post so I wanted to thank you for this topics - they are very intresting and helpful. I hope you will continue this series.
regards!
Cheers Lazy Pictures. The evolution of 40k series will be ongoing, I have a whole bunch of other things I want to take a look at, it just takes some time to do all the research and put my thoughts together. Now that you are an official follower, you will be able to see when they appear!
DeleteLooking forward for this articles)
DeleteIt's a pleasure to read them)
Orks!
ReplyDeleteUltramarines.
ReplyDeleteIf I win, can I donate it back to your blog for another giveaway (or set of giveaways), or would you just give it to the next person on the list?
If someone wins and doesn't want the prize, I can donate it to the "Hero for a day" charity event I mentioned above for a charity raffle or lottery.
DeleteMy favorite army is da ORKS.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Because they show that even if you are a fungus, all you have to do to get things to work is to believe.
Favourite army is tyranids. Intergalactic super predators are awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhite Scars: Always loved the look since Rogue Trader but disliked the White Scars = Bikes outlook GW maintained until the release of Kauyon.
ReplyDeleteNow finally I can play a White Scars force that isn't just about bikes!
Blood Angels,
ReplyDeleteCharging units, Death Company and Heavy Flamers.
I play Iron Hands, but only as a humanoid substitute for Necrons. Regardless of how they play on the tabletop, the narrative of a great rage encased in icy steel logic is too tasty to pass up.
ReplyDeleteFavorite army is blood angels.
ReplyDeleteDeath company and Lemartes models sold me the minute I saw them. The lore behind them is pretty sweet too.
Space marines. they are so awesome. I sold mine years ago and have been regretting it ever since.
ReplyDeleteSpace marines. they are so awesome. I sold mine years ago and have been regretting it ever since.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your Blog birthday. It's Relictors Chapter SM for me. Great background, questionable use of Chaos artefacts to battle Chaos, excommunicated by the Inquisition but used by the Radical inquisitors and hunted by the Grey Knights, yet loyal. I like the mystery behind them and the moody, realistic subdued colour scheme which is easy to replicate... I have quite a few!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite army is probably Space Marines, Salamanders in particular. I just find the fact that they actually protect humanity with their strength to be refreshing.
ReplyDeletemarines.
ReplyDeletethe versatility and durability of them both in the fluff and in game.
Blood Angels. Always loved the fluff, and love the aesthetics.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to nail down a favorite army, Fluff wise I like the Imperial Guard because humans are the weakest species in the game and they have to fight all these nasties with a flashlight and some flak armor. Sheer numbers backed up by tanks is how humans survive.
ReplyDeleteNecrons because they are the first army I played and have a unique feel when playing them ie not dying. But winning these models would be nice cause I'm staring space marines.😃
ReplyDeleteWhen I started playing 40K about 10 years ago, I had just sculpted a green stuff miniature for the FU-UK sculpting contest, a very simple model which looked a bit like a demon. The organizers of the contest were so kind as to send everybody who participated ten casts of their own sculpts.
ReplyDeleteI started to use these as summoned lesser daemons which was an entry in the Chaos Space Marines codex of the 5th edition. Looking through the codex for other units, I liked the plague marines best. Later I added a chaos lord with a daemon weapon and three obliterators.
So plague marines with summoned lesser daemons are my favorite 40K army.
Your giveaway is very generous, cool! Happy birthday to your blog!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite army is Dark Angels. I won't be new here - started to collecting WH 40k with Dark Vengeance and I really love the game… DA fluff (hunting those Emperor-forsaken heretics!), color scheme and variety of the army: fast ravenwing is awesome, heavy deathwing even more awesome - but the most awesome-est ever is possibility to have 2 k points tri-wing army. Someday at least, as for now I really lack even basic models... Will buy them when possible, after couple of years reaching my dream army, but this beautiful Demi-company would be so much helpful...
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWill try to keep this short and sweet, but my favorite 40k army is Dark angels. Went halves in Dark Vengeance with a mate about 6 months ago and have been collecting DA ever since. I find their ongoing determination and ruthlessness to hunt the fallen very appealing, especially in how well that translates through their strategies on the tabletop. Aesthetically the models are also great, and definitely prompted me to start collecting them over other chapters. Would love to put this battle demi-company to good use against all sorts of Xeno and traitorous heretics.
ReplyDeleteThe Emperor thanks you for your devotion!

ReplyDeleteIt is pretty sweet!

ReplyDeleteFav boys in blues ! Ultramarines all the way !
ReplyDeleteMy favorite army is the Dark Angels. Bought my son dark vengeance when it came out because I wanted the chaos side. Ended up helping him assemble and paint the dark angels side, and ended up trading him the chaos side for the angels after reading some of the books and the fluff in the codex. Gotta just love the good guys that aren't quite so good all the time.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, great reviews and battle reports.
Cheers Paul, good luck in the competition!
DeleteVery hard question also because i collect to many army...damn...
ReplyDeleteBut at the end maybe i will say adeptus mechanicus (cult and skitarii), i realy love their steampunk look and i find that minis stunning.
Not sure why I hadn't commented here but seeing everyone else had it felt rude that I'd not. Anyway, Tyranids are my favourite, its been difficult to come to terms with a faction I never actually liked, but they're so forgiving to paint, have one of the largest range of miniatures [even if they're options aren't great] and you can always make your own stuff [as I've proved] and whatever level of scratchbuild is acceptable because they're organic anyway.
ReplyDeletegood luck everyone

ReplyDeleteDark Angels are my favorite. Always loved the idea of them being a knightly order that hides a dark secret.
ReplyDeleteIn dedicato imperatum ultra articulo mortis (For the Emperor beyond the point of death), I've always loved the Legion of the Damned. I probably don't need to explain why ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy favourite army are Chaos Marines - They were my first army that I played when I was learning the game, and stuck with them for quite a long time. I'd love to start a pre-heresy Chaos army using the Space Marine codex, maybe in Emperor's Children colours :)
ReplyDeleteDark Angels because I love the background
ReplyDeleteNecrons, because they are TOmb Kings in SPEHHHS :D
ReplyDelete
