Hobby Season 2016-2017: Review

I'm a bit late to the party with my review of my hobby season for 2016-2017, but there has been a lot of other blog content that I have wanted to get out recently (and I don't like double posting!).

The hobby season is a feature run by Dave at Confessions of a 40k addict that a number of other great bloggers take part in. Last year, I set myself some hobby goals try and complete, so let's see how I got on.

1. Find a new gaming club- SUCCESS
Last year, I was in the process of moving down to Newcastle, so one of my hobby goals for the year was to find a new gaming club to play 40k. Fortunately, this hobby goal was a big success and I found several new clubs to attend.
In Newcastle, I was able to attend the Heaton Gaming Club, Newcastle Warlords gaming club and Durham Raiders, three excellent clubs in the area where I had a lot of great discussions with fellow hobbyists and some fantastic battles to write up as battle reports.

In addition, an awesome new gaming store opened in Sunderland during my time in Newcastle. Battle Bunker is a great store which runs regular tournaments, as well as having plenty of great tables available for casual gaming.

2. Visit Warhammer World- FAIL
I never managed to make a trip down to Warhammer world this year. I did make it down to Warhammer Fest in Coventry, but didn't make it over to Nottingham.

Fortunately, Oxford is not too far from Nottingham, so I may be able to get this goal achieved in the following year.

3. Fight Some Bloggers- SUCCESS (kind of)
I had hoped that the move further south would allow me to meet up with some bloggers and fight some games. I did end up playing some bloggers at a number of tournaments, but not really the way I had intended when I set the goals.

Hopefully if I attend Alex's (From the Fang) gaming event in November, I can finally get a game against Alex or Dave (Confessions of a 40k addict), as I have seen them at a ton of events, but never actually got a game against them at this point.

4. Finish another army- SUCCESS
This hobby year, I managed to get my Deathwatch army completed. This was an army where I really tried to push my painting skills and I really think it payed off. For me, I think it is a great looking force and I am really proud of it when I see it on the tabletop.

By far, it is the army I have gotten the most compliments for at events. Don't worry, there will be an army showcase post coming soon where I will be showing off the whole collection and talking a bit more about it.

For now though, here is a sneak peak at one of the photos.

5. Paint more terrain- SUCCESS
This year, I managed to get some more of my cityfight ruins painted up, as well as completing my 3rd edition card terrain collection.

Still plenty more terrain to paint up though. Maybe this year I will finally purchase a gaming mat, so that I can get some cityfight games played.

6. Paint my Knight- FAIL
I got as far as undercoating the Knight this year, but that was about it. Still on my to-do list though, as Imperial Knights appear to be quite strong in 8th edition.

So, last hobby season, I was able to complete four out of my six goals. I would call that a successful year!
I will also be coming up with some hobby goals for the 2017/2018 season, so expect to see the unsuccessful goals make a return for the coming year.

    1. That would be awesome. Would love to take on the Danse again, see how 8th edition is treating them!

  2. Its so annoying that the battle bunker has opened up, it is literally at the bottom of my old street, could have walked there in only a few minutes! Now I'm hundreds of miles from anything remotely similar!

  4. Cool review, has it been a year already? Wow how time flies right.

Your Deathwatch army looks really nice, you definitely can be proud of it!

Has Warhammer Fest always been at Coventry? I used to live there for 2 years, bummer.

    On to another great year!

    1. Cheers Chris! Not sure if it's always been in Coventry, this was the first year I tried to go.

    2. I think the first "fest" in Coventry was about 4 years ago? There was something before that but they stopped doing that for several years before they started with the warhammer fest.

  5. Congrats on the finished army. Feels good doesn't it. Everytime I get close to finishing an army I start a new one. #Firstworldproblems
