Battle Report 5- 1500 pts White Scars vs White Scars

Another Thursday, another game at Dundee Wargames and another written battle report (complete with pictures and turn diagrams). This time it was brother vs. brother, Khan vs. Khan, this week I faced off against Allan's White Scars with my own White Scars. Even though both forces were from the same chapter, the armies we were fielding were very different. The game was 1500 pts a side and was played on a 4 foot by 4 foot board. We rolled up Crusade on the eternal war missions (and rolled 5 objectives to claim).

Brother against Brother- The White Scars Advance.
My army was:
Kor’sarro Khan on Moondakken
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs
5 Bikers- 2 x meltaguns, sergeant with meltabombs
10 tactical marines- Meltagun, sergeant with combi-melta and meltabombs in drop pod
10 devastator marines- 4 missile launchers, with Rhino
5 Scouts- sergeant with meltabombs, in Landspeeder Storm
3 Centurions- 3 grav cannons and grav amps
Stormtalon

My warlord trait was set with Khan.

Dundee 40k tournament Armies on Display

Below are some photos of the armies that appeared at the recent tournament I attended at Dundee Wargames Club.
First up is Mark's Fantastic Tau army. Mark was my second opponent at the tournament and thoroughly demolished my army. His army was so nice, I didn't want to remove any models from the table (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

Next up, a very nice mechanium 30k army that was in use.

Then we had a Space Wolves army with snow bases.

Followed by some Sister of Battle with their massive Fortress of Redemption.

We also had some fantastic assassins, painted to look like comic book characters. We had the Vindicare as Deadshot, Callidus as Black Widow, Culexus as Magneto and Eversor as Deadpool.

And last, but by no means least, we have the winner of best army, Luke's fantastic Imperial Fists army (sorry for the shoddy photos, the army was stunning in person).

Dundee 40k Tournament after action report

On 24th May, Dundee Wargames held a one day 40k tournament that I was fortunate enough to attend. I thought I would write up my thoughts on my games (what worked and what could be improved).
The format was three games of 1500 pts chosen from up to two detachments. There were three different missions using a mixture of eternal war and maelstrom objectives. I decided to run my blog wars army minus the Chapter Master and Scouts to bring it down to size.
My army arrayed for battle.

The army was:
Kor’sarro Khan on Moondakken
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs
5 Bikers- 2 x meltaguns, sergeant with meltabombs
10 tactical marines- Meltagun, sergeant with combi-melta and meltabombs in drop pod
10 devastator marines- 4 missile launchers, with Rhino
Attack Bike with Multimelta

3 Centurions- 3 grav cannons and grav amps
Stormtalon

White Scars Grav Centurions

During my painting frenzy last week and over the weekend, I also managed to paint my Grav Centurions. I recently purchased these from ebay and thought I would get them done while I had the painting bug. As any marine player will tell you, the grav cannon/grav amp combination on these guys is very powerful. The were done using my usual white scars colour scheme.
Right figure: Agrax earthshade wash applied to white undercoat.
Left figure: Followed by Ulthuan Grey drybrush.

Battle Report 4- 1500 pts White Scars vs Astra Militarum

Once again, I headed to Dundee Wargamers for a 40k battle. This time, I played against Mark and his Astra Militarum army. Playing guard myself, I knew they had a lot of units that could mess up my day.
This time we played 1500 pts on a standard 6’x4’ board, and rolled up Big Guns Never Tire. Mark was just getting back in to 40k and wanted to dust off his guard for a game.
Both forces marshal for battle.
My army was a slightly modified version of my Blog wars army that I wanted to test:
Kor’sarro Khan on Moondakken (K)
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs (B1)
5 Bikers- 2 x grav gun, sergeant with meltabombs (B3)
5 Bikers- 2 x meltaguns, sergeant with meltabombs (B2)
10 tactical marines- Meltagun, sergeant with combi-melta and meltabombs (TS) in drop pod (DP)
10 devastator marines- 4 missile launchers (DS), Rhino (R)
2 Attack bikes- Multimeltas (AB1 and AB2)
3 Centurions- 3 grav cannons and grav amps (C)
Stormtalon (S)

My warlord trait was set with Khan.
Mark was running:
Company command squad- 3 Sniper rifles (CC)
4 Squads of Veterans- Each squad has flamer and grenade launcher (VS1-4)
Leman Russ (LR1)
Leman Russ (LR2)
Leman Russ Vanquisher (LRV)
Baneblade (!?!) (B)
Mark’s warlord trait gave him first Relentless, then Outflank on the re-roll.

White Scars Chapter Master

I managed to get a great deal of painting done last week and at the weekend, meaning that I have finished my blog wars army. Tournaments act as a great deadline for getting stuff painted quickly. With a definitive date to get everything finished by, models don't sit languishing undercoated in a box for months/years. I'll post the completed units and army in the following week (got to spread that content out somehow!).
Last week, I was able to complete the painting on my newly assembled Chapter Master on bike.

After a white undercoat, the model was give an Agrax Earthshade wash, followed by Ulthuan Grey Drybrushing.

Then a drybrushing of White Scar (of course!).

The red lining was given a Basecoat of Mephiston Red, followed by a Carroburg Crimson wash, then Evil Sunz red highlight.

The finished Chapter Master.

I am quite happy with how he turned out. I spent a bit more time on the red lining of the biker to make it look neater than my previous attempts. As I have said previously, I am never going to be a Golden Demon standard painter (I just don't have the skill or patience), but I like getting things painted to a decent tabletop standard.
The gold on the iron halo and backpack help him to stand out from the other bikers on the battlefield. Overall, the army is coming together quite nicely.

Fondly remembering White Dwarf

You’ve probably been hearing it for years and it is all over the internet; White Dwarf used to be so much better, why don’t they have proper articles?, it’s just a glorified sales magazine now......

Call it nostalgia, call it random internet complaining, but I really miss the good old days of White Dwarf. When I first started in this hobby back in high school, one of the highlights of the month was waiting for the new White Dwarf to be released. On a Friday, I would get off the school bus a few stops early to go to the newsagents and buy a copy- it was worth the extra walk home. I would then spend the whole weekend poring over my copy, carefully reading and re-reading every article, checking out the battle report(s) for tactical hints and tips, looking for terrain ideas to add to my slowly expanding collection. To a young hobby-er, just starting to get into the game, it was bliss!

My first issue was White Dwarf 210, way back in May 1997, and I had (and still have) a complete collection of issues spanning several years (maybe even a decade). I don’t know when I stopped buying it on a regular basis, but I think I kept it up for a good while despite reading very little of the content for a long run of issues towards the end.

You never forget your first Ork.......

Battle Report 3- 1850 pts White Scars vs Death Guard/Imperial Knight

Last weekend I managed to get in a couple of practice games with my White Scars army for blog wars. The game was against Jamie from Warsoc (St Andrews wargaming club) and he was bringing his 30k Death Guard army with allied Imperial Knight. I asked him to bring the knight along as he is the only player in our club with one and I wanted to see how well my army might handle one.
Jamie has a really nice looking heresy army and I was fighting along with it at our apocalypse battle last month. I knew it was a tough army, but wanted to see how my white scars would go up against it.

The battle in full swing.

White Scars blog wars army

I thought I would go through my choices for my blog wars white scars army and why I chose them.
Blog wars requires you to take a special character, with White Scars there is only one choice; Khan. Being forced to take Khan is not really a disadvantage. He provides the ability to take bike squads as troops units when mounted on a bike, and provides an awesome ability that gives all bike units and units with dedicated transports Scout, a very powerful ability that I have had a lot of fun with.

KHAAAAAAAN! (Cause you've never heard that before)

White Scars WIP- Scouts and Chapter Master

Over the last week I got the painting on the scouts finished. I'm happy with the finish on these, when I have previously painted scouts they tended to come out very messy.

Battle Report 2- 1500pts White Scars vs Harlequins

Last Thursday night I ventured over the river to attend Elysium wargames, a club that meets in Dundee. I played a 1500 point game with a very nice guy called Pete. I brought my White Scars (to test out my blog wars list) and Pete was playing with Harlequins. I’ve never played Harlequins before, but if they were anything like Eldar, I knew I was in for a tough fight.

Arrayed for battle.
As we were playing on a 4’x4’ board, we decided on 1500 pts. I took my blog wars army, but dropped Khan, the scouts in the Landspeeder Storm and the Stormtalon to get to the agreed points level. We agreed to play purge the alien (i.e. just kill one another).

Board games arrive

When I got home today my copy of Assassinorum Execution force had arrived. The contents look really good and I have liked what I have seen of the assassin models so far.

When I ordered the game, I picked up a copy of white dwarf too in order to get the rules for using the assassins in normal 40k (one of the main reasons I ordered the game was to get all the assassin figures), but hopefully it should be a decent board game. After checking out the rules for assassins, I cannot wait to give them a go. Just wait till the Culexus gets in amongst my friend's seer council or daemons (I wonder if it is too late to try and paint one up for my blog wars army?)

Also arrived recently was a copy of Space Hulk that I got from ebay. I've never played it before, but have always liked the look of it. I got it a bit cheaper as the terminator models are missing. I have enough terminators in my Dark Angels army to use in the game, so am looking forward to trying it out in the near future.

Has anyone played space hulk before (or even had a go at execution force)? Was it worth picking them up?

White Scars WIP 2

With a holiday weekend here in the UK, I got a chance to get some more work done on finishing my White Scars army for blog wars.
I finished off the third bike squad armed with meltaguns. Most of the painting was finished from last time I was working on them, I took the opportunity to clean up some of the red lines on the bikes as I thought they looked a bit sloppy when I saw the photos of them last time. The bases were flocked to match my gaming mat (and much of my terrain) and the transfers were applied to the squad.

My White Scars army

It all started with a Stormtalon.

The White Scars arrayed for battle.
The club purchased one for its marine army and I got the opportunity to paint it (Warsoc in St Andrews maintains a space marine army to teach new players how to play 40k, it is mostly made up of models from the various starter sets over the years). The club army has not been painted (we keep meaning to get round to it, honest!), but was supposed to be Dark Angels based on the contents of the Dark Vengeance boxed set. However, Dark Angel armies cannot take a stormtalon. This meant I had to paint it up in another chapter’s colours. I remembered an old issue of White Dwarf where they showed you how to paint up a stormtalon in the White Scars colour scheme. I thought the flyer looked really good when painted up in this scheme and decided to give it a go.

After painting it up, I decided to look up some information on the White Scars as an army. Apparently, the White Scars are quite a good army and one or two other people had noticed this and written about it. They have even showed up at a tournament or two……
