Squaduary Week 4- Deathwatch Veterans complete!

Today marks the end of Squaduary, the month long painting challenge to get a squad completely painted in February.

The event was run by Rory over at Stepping Between Games, and was a great way to get my Deathwatch Veterans complete and to see the hobby progress that other bloggers and gamers were making too!

So below are the pictures of my completed squad.

Thanks to Rory for running such a great event. With Squaduary complete, it's only a short time until I pick up the brushes once more to take part in Monster March

  1. These guys look great Mike - not wanting to sound patronising, but they really show off how far your painting has come on in a short space of time!

    1. Not at all Nick, I happen to be in complete agreement with you! Even now, I notice things that I wish I could go back and change or improve upon.
It's actually been a very rewarding experience getting the army painted up and trying to improve my skills. I've been getting a lot of compliments on them at the club and at the tournament at the weekend, so was very happy.

    Cheers.

    1. Thanks Dave. I am currently writing up my battle reports from Birthday Bash at the weekend, which should hopefully be an interesting read.

  6. Hi Mike - loving the army, it's looking really good. A question for you though...

The rules permit (and FAQ backs this up), that DW are able to take their heavy weapons (frag cannon, infernus heavy bolter, etc) *and* still take a stormshield. Is this a weapon combination that you've considered? I've been trying to figure out how on earth I would model this - and I'm drawing a blank. I've considered having a shield looking like it's been punched into the ground in front of the marine - but I'm undecided, and wondered what others were thinking...

(Also, I'm not entirely sure whether I agree with the weapon combination either - so an option to magnetise the shield, in case I ever decide to remove it would be a bonus.)

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Nick,

the Storm Shield and Frag Cannon combo is not one I've ever really considered to be honest. It would be useful, but 57 points for a T4, one-wound model is a lot, considering he will most likely fall to Bolter fire. One of the big problems with Deathwatch is loading up on too many of the goodies. You can easily make a squad cost over 300 points, but they are still just as fragile as normal Marines.
One option that might be worthwhile is a Heavy Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield. It's expensive, but might help ensure that the Veteran gets to strike. It's a pity they have no access to some form of Apothecary.

If you wanted to model it, I think that sticking the shield in the ground in front of the model would be pretty cool looking. Alternatively, you could try mounting it onto the side of the Frag Cannon.

    2. Cheers for the thoughts Mike. I take your point regarding the points (pardon the pun!)
