Inspirational Terrain

With a break in painting my models, I have decided to take a look at making some more terrain. I have a long list of projects that I wish to do; some are repairs to existing pieces, some are new projects that I have had in mind for a while. I got to thinking about where I go to for ideas for the projects that I plan. Below are some of the places that I look for inspiration:

1. White Dwarf and GW
As I have said previously, I get a lot of my inspiration for terrain and painting from old issues of White Dwarf and GW webpages. When I am thinking of new terrain projects, I frequently flick through old issues of White Dwarf to see what I can come up with.
This article gave me the idea for building some recent ruins.

2. Other Blogs
There are a whole host of great blogs out there for inspiration on terrain and model making (check out my blog roll for some of them). One blog that I would like to highlight is Rob Hawkins hobby blog. Rob does some amazing custom work and provides some great terrain tutorials.

3. Google images
One big source of inspiration for me is google images. I simply type in what I am looking for (40k terrain, wargames trenches, etc) and you can be inundated with quality images to browse.

4. ebay
I find a surprising amount of terrain on ebay that looks great and provides some nice ideas for my own work.

So what about the rest of you out there? Where do you go to for ideas or inspiration when starting new projects?

  1. I go to the local pet store! I know it sounds weird but the stuff they bring out for fish tanks these days is mental, and much cheaper than dedicated terrain models from a hobby store. I also find travelling and bushwalking helps a lot. I have been particularly inspired by the terrain I experienced in Japan (around Kumamoto in the south and closer to Tokyo in Hakone). I have a few Japan-esque projects in the works.
